主讲人:Loxton Ryan

Biography: Ryan Loxton is an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Curtin University, Australia. Ryan's research focuses on the theory and applications of mathematical optimization and process control. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed research articles in these areas, including many in leading international journals such as Automatica, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, Systems and Control Letters, and Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications. Ryan has been awarded prestigious research fellowships from the Australian Research Council and the National Science Foundation of China. He was the winner of the prestigious 2014 West Australian Young Scientist of the Year Award from the West Australian State Government. Ryan is a Managing Editor of the Journal of Industrial and Management Optimization, and has successfully collaborated with companies such as Woodside Energy and Linkforce Engineering to solve real-world optimization problems arising in the Australian resources industry.

Abstract :University courses in science and engineering focus primarily on subject-specific hard/technical skills. Soft skills related to communication, teamwork, organization, and leadership are much harder to quantify and assess, and are therefore often neglected by universities. Yet soft skills are critical to students' future career success, whether in academia or in industry. Graduate students in particular face the daunting task of transitioning from "learner" to "inventor" and this requires much more than just technical knowledge – for example, the ability to write and give presentations is crucial to success as a graduate student, but these skills are often not taught as part of the graduate program. This talk will provide graduate students with advice on enhancing their soft skills to complement their technical ability. The talk is based on the speaker's personal experience as a young researcher who has worked with many graduate students in China.

Pedro Albertos教授简介

Pedro Albertos, past president of IFAC (the International Federation of Automatic Control) in 1999-2002, IFAC Fellow and Advisor, and Senior Member of IEEE, is a world recognized expert in real-time control, leading several projects in the field. Full Professor since 1975, he is currently Emeritus Professor at Systems Engineering and Control Dept. UPV, Spain. He is Doctor Honoris-Causa from Oulu University (Finland) and Bucharest Polytechnic (Rumania) and Honorary Professor from the Northeastern University, Shenyang, RPC.

Invited Professor in more than 25 Universities, he delivered seminars in more than 30 universities and research centers. Authored over 300 papers, book chapters and congress communications, co-editor of 7 books and co-author of "Multivariable Control Systems" (Springer 2004) and "Feedback and Control for Everyone" (Springer 2010), he is also associated editor of Control Engineering Practice and Editor in Chief of the Spanish journal RIAI. His research interest includes multivariable control and non-conventional sampling control systems, with focus on time delays and multirate sampling patterns.

讲座内容简介

Process modeling and identification are complex activities requiring many resources, leading to different solutions. It is relevant to beaware of the kind of model needed for a specific activity. On the other hand, control performance obtained by model-based control design is constrained tothe model used in the control design procedure. In this 4-hours seminar, some issues related to both the modeling (closed-loop identification, modelreduction, model comparison) and the control design (stability and performance,control limitations, robustness measurements) are outlined and the new paradigmof iterative identification and control design is introduced. Some examples illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.

讲座内容简介
This is a motivation 4-hours seminar dealing with the basic concepts of Systems, Control and their impact in all the human activities. Based on examples of systems and signals taken from different disciplines, some basic models are outlined. Controlled systems are a particular kind of systems where a designed control subsystem acts to define the dynamic and static behavior of a process. The properties of controlled systems and different methodologies to design the control are outlined, pointing out the benefits of the control. Mathsare avoided as much as possible and the most relevant concepts are presented and discussed.

随机最优控制与机器学习

Vicenç Gómez is a post-doctoral fellow at the Artificial Intelligence group at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) under UPFellows grant (FP7 Marie Curie Actions COFUND Programme). Before joining the group, he worked as a research fellow in the machine learning group at the Radboud University Nijmegen (The Netherlands) with Prof. Dr. Hilbert. J. Kappen, where he performed research within several European-Union funded projects for more than five years. He obtained the Ph.D. in Computer Science and Digital Communication at UPF in 2008.

Vicenç research focuses primarily on the development of novel machine learning methods for the analysis and/or control of complex systems. He follows a multi-disciplinary approach at the interface between computer science, control theory and statistical physics. He has applied his research in domains such as social networks, robotics, brain computer interfaces and the smart grid. His has recently developed control methods that have been successfully applied to coordinate teams of helicopter drones.

The lecture series will cover the following content:

- One lecture on introduction to optimal control (deterministic
case, stochastic case, linear quadratic Gaussian, etc), 2 - 5 p.m., Oct. 7th. 2015  Room 223, Insitute of Cyber-Systems & Control. 

Schedule of the rest of lectures will be discussed over the first meeting.

- One lecture on linearly solvable MDPs (discrete case, more
general) and Path integral control (fundamentals and recent results)

- One lecture about the details of the CRATES simulator for control of teams of quadrotors (this one would be a more practicalsession and ideally we should have computers)
